Its Hard to Choose a Good Web Host

So, it seems that DSTInternet.com is no more.  I knew that I smelled the acrid stench of bankruptcy or scam.  They went “dark” shortly after I asked them to discontinue my hosting and notify me of such.  The notification did not come and I doubt that it will now.  Their own site doesn’t reslove.

So, why, why, why!

Why do the free web hosts stay online but the paid ones go offline?  Why? What happened to promises of uptime and promises of backups and redundance?  Its all bullshit and super stinky at that! It looks like I had better move coreythompson.com as soon as dstinternet gets it back online.  This is ridiculous.

Offline is Bad

Seems that http://coreythompson.com is currently unavailable.  I’ll have to track how long, as I’ve just gone with my host a few weeks ago.  The site’s been fast until now, though.  Its still there, as I can log in with FTP.  Its probably the web server.

Yes I’m still using WordPress

Just not here so much.  My hosted blog is running on WP.  I’m about to change to a nightly build, actually.  That should prove to be interesting.

So does it matter where?

So, should I trust wordpress.com to be a good blog host for me as they like to use snap for monetary gain and they want to charge for things like domain mapping and the ability to cutomize your CSS.  I’d think that was a decent thing if there weren’t others, albeit direct competitors, who offer some of this for free.

So, what’s the incentive? Do you use WordPress.com and pay for the ability to use your own domain and to edit the style of your site? Or, do you use Blogger and get that for free?  Or, do you get free hosting (which is all over the place) and use WordPress and edit to your heart’s content?

Its a connundrum, for sure.
